Character Quote:

"Billy's not here so I'm in charge and why haven't you finished those spuds yet?"

When Joanne was Sous Chef, she often found that she would be left in charge particularly when personal events all occurred together in Billy's private life. Her own private life, however, was a complete disaster as far as her boyfriend Ray was concerned. All she's ever wanted is to spend time with Ray, a wish often denied to her. This position looks like being filled by Sam though

In the latter half of 2001, Joanne had argument after argument with Ray because of his marriage to Mandy and his previous promise to want to be with her (although in fairness she had turned down a proposal of marriage from Ray when she found out why he wanted the marriage so badly - so he could stay in the country). In the end she just could not take any more and fled the country to live with her brother.

Jo got caught up in the battle between Phil and his stepfather Brian over his wife Julie that Brian kept beating. Brian took Joanne up onto the roof and threatened to throw her off it almost certainly to her death. She had called the police beforehand but the radio call to a squad car was blocked by Des and Minty's pirate radio transmissions. Phil tried to talk him down with no success but Ray saved Joanne as Brian slipped off and was pulled to safety before being carted off to prison.

A brittle working relationship with Billy means that it breaks pretty much with little effort on behalf of both parties. Joanne's tongue often moved quicker than her brain which makes her sound insensitive. Ray's constant excuses to stay in his marriage to Mandy was like a constant headache to her and Jo thought she'd inform Mandy hours before her death that Ray was going to leave her. After Mandy died Ray still wouldn't sleep with her and that was the last straw.

To be fair, Jo and Ray have not had the best relationship in the world. She has dumped him three times already. When buying a house for her and Ray, she wanted to be married by the end of 2001 as well and that was an excuse for her to dump him, the first of three.

Joanne's attitude towards Ray after the death of Mandy was seen by the fans in a vote on this site as insensitive. She couldn't understand how cruel it would look to Mandy's bereaved parents, even more so on the same night at the death if her and Ray slept together.

Since Mandy announced that Ray was her baby's father (which he wasn't), Jo and Mandy never really saw eye-to-eye again, although Mandy's stirring didn't really help the situation. Then when Oona got involved it opened up a whole new can of worms when she found out from Jo that Ray wasn't the father of Mandy's baby Holly.

Jo returned to Crossroads and quickly won her old job back in the kitchen, a move which upste Des since he'd applied for that position. Her new boyfriend Sam has been caught stealing in the kitchen as well.
