Patrick Russell

Character Quote:

"Kate, you mean everything to me and you look gorgeous today as you always do."

Patrick's main interest was his family and his wife Kate with whom he spent 22 years married to. He was delighted to meet up with Diane, an old friend of his in the summer of 2001, but she caused friction between Patrick and Kate, particularly when she tried to seduce him. Kate never really got along with Diane, blaming her for the sudden downturn in the family. Diane "borrowed" £25,000 in August 2001 and returned it in November with £5,000 interest. Patrick tried to explain that they'd made a profit but Kate was beyond caring by this point, more interested in why he'd lent Diane, of all people, the money without consulting her first.

It was Patrick who invested in the hotel originally in 1998 and he and his wife bought a 70% share. He prefers to watch from behind the scenes giving Kate all the glory in the process. Indeed, Patrick was lovingly devoted to his wife.

In the first instant, he was not happy to learn that his daughter Nicola was dating somebody he saw as a thug. He stepped in to split that relationship up, but they found a way around it. Needless to say, when his daughter ran away to London with Phil in May 2001, he thought that Phil had threatened her into going with him.

At Nicola's return, Patrick finally put paid to Phil's attempts to regain employment at the hotel and he spent four weeks trying to get to see Nicola by sneaking into the hotel to her room. Phil saved Scott Booth's life after Scott accidentally started a fire in the shed which Phil pulled him out of. Scott scraped, pleaded and begged Patrick to give Phil a job at the hotel and so he finally caved in. The fact that this apparent insensitive thug had saved his grandson's life wasn't enough to forgive and forget in Patrick's eyes.

Patrick suffered a heart attack in September 2001 when he caught Jake and the then Sarah-Jane Harvey conversing together and assumed that there was something going on. He confronted Jake, the action of which triggered the heart attack. He was rushed to hospital where he spent three weeks conversing with Jake in his suspicions of Sarah-Jane.

He had hired a private investigator to dig up as much as he could on Sarah in an attempt to convince his son Mark to call off his wedding to her. It emerged that she was an imposter and when she demanded £100,000 to get lost, she got it and left Mark standing at the altar. Patrick, on the other hand, was advised to take it easy by his doctors in all areas of his life.

Be that as it may, he suffered a second heart attack in December 2001 a fortnight before Christmas. This was fatal, he died in his daughter Nicola's arms as he collapsed. She called reception, Sarah called the paramedics and raced up to give first aid. When the paramedics arrived, they could do nothing. Patrick had already died. He was buried in the graveyard of the local church on December 19th 2001.

In his will, read out after the Christmas holiday, he left Mark and Nicola each with a 5% share, with Nicola's to be tied up until she was 21. Tracey inherited material pocessions and Patrick's beloved grandson Scott inherited a set of encylopaedias. Jake had his 25% share withdrawn to his fury.
